~*6 weeks*~ 9 pounds 14oz*~

As you have read we have all been passing around the flu from Sky to Noah to Mom and now Aubrie... We thought we had made it through without her getting it! Talk about worry! For the past few days she has been really sleepy so we knew something was up. Well on Sunday morning at 3am she woke up with a temperature or 100.8,( If a newborns temperature ( under 8 weeks) goes above 100.4 you are supposed to take them to the Dr immediately) When we got up in the morning it was the same and so I made an appointment for her. Once at the Dr her temp had gone down to 99.9 and they said if she goes over 100.4 again to take her to Childrens Hospital Emergency room and they would do a bunch of work ups (urine, blood, spinal tap) to make sure it wasn't something bacterial, which can be serious in newborns because their body can not fight it off, and it spreads into their bloodstream quickly. It is protocol that any baby under 8 weeks w/ a temp have these tests done. (ugh!) Of course mom was so worried and stressed out! Aunt Debbie called my sweet friend Heather and her hubby Alex was kind enough to give us a blessing...

Soooo Monday evening at 10pm Aubrie spiked a temp of 100.8 and so off mom and Aubrie went to the ER. (I wasn't too excited to go by myself to see her go through all this trauma :( ) But once there they admitted us to a room and the nurses came in and wanted to test for RSV and the flu. They do this by sticking a tiny tube up her nose and threading it all the way in and then they suck all her mucous out. She had quite a bit but obviously did not enjoy the process at all... That was only the beginning... Next they had to get a urine sample, to do this they had to put a catheter in. The nurse did the catheter while the other held her legs down. She tried about 5 times and couldn't get it in, all the while Aubrie is crying her little heart out. :( Finally the male nurse took a try and immediately got it in. ugh! Next they had to draw blood/ put in an IV. They searched all her veins in both her arms and legs which included tying the rubber band type things on each arm and leg like 40 times :( She absolutely hated that..and on top of that the male nurse accidentally flipped her with the band which is probably the hardest she cried all night :(... So after two needle sticks in one hand and one in another and hours of crying they let her a rest for a while.(still unable to get the blood draw/iv) A few minutes later another two nurses came in and one of them finally found a good spot in the midarm. Soo they got their blood and urine and then they gave her some water through the IV... All of this took about 4 1/2 hours.. 4 of them with Aubrie crying and very unhappy:( and of course its super hard on mom to see her go through all this. To have Aubrie looking into my eyes giving the look of "help me mom" as I'm trying to console her while everyone is poking at her, and not being able to stop it, thats the hardest part...A little baby so young shouldn't have to experience all those pains, its always worries me what these experiences do to them, if it traumatizes them and what not... Poor lil mama... I hope we don't have to experience anything like this again... not fun!

Anyway, the results from the mucous test came back and she was diagnosed with the flu.. They prescribed some flu medication and gave her a dose there. Come to find out babies under 1 should not have this medication because the blood brain barrier is not yet there. It caused toxicity in newborn rats and even death... The pharmacy wouldn't even fill it, and I also don't feel at all comfortable giving it to her. Nates actually on the phone right now with the ER questioning them about it.... Makes me sick to my stomach...

She did have another appointment today with her regular Dr, and she said she looks wonderful, her color, her ears, chest, cry, reactions,etc... said she wouldn't have even thought she had the flu if she didn't know. Ive noticed she is more alert today (yet also has more of a stuffy nose). Hopefully she is on her way to feeling better. The Dr said since I am breastfeeding and have had the virus before her, it may have passed on some immunity in the breast milk and so she is not likely to get it very bad. Keeping our fingers crossed! :O) Not fun stuff for a tiny little girlie ( or her mom) I'm just thankful they passed on the spinal tap when they found out she had the flu.. I never thought I would be happy to hear that she had the flu :) The pic I included was today, poor lil mama :( and the other is of her at 5 weeks 6 days.. ( I didn't get her 6 week pic, darn! The day was too hectic and she wasn't feeling well)

Geeeeeessss What a tough time for her and you. I know how heartbreaking it is to see you baby going through all that stuff. He first pictures you posted looks like she feel pretty crapy. I hate it when little ones are sick. Give her a big kiss and Hug from Grandma honey. I wish i was there to help out. Such a precious little one.
